EQHM-17 harmonic drive equatorial mount

EQHM-17 is a mount equipped with harmonic drives on both axes. Essentially, it is a German equatorial mount (EQ) but can also operate in ALT-AZ mode.

The device is built as a monoblock with a primarily steel structure, with the RA and DEC axes protruding from a common housing. This design makes the mount more compact and rigid, and eliminates the need for connecting cables between the two axis assemblies. The mount is constructed from powder-coated stainless steel plates in black, creating the main chassis. The mounting brackets for the wedge and dovetail are made of aluminum, while the side panels are made of plastic. It features 17-100 steel harmonic gears. The overall gearing ratio on both axes is 500:1, with the first stage being a 5:1 belt drive and the second stage being a 100:1 harmonic drive.

In the right ascension axis, an electromagnetic brake is used to prevent the axis from rotating in case of a power interruption (a standard feature). The device is controlled using the OnStepX module, which includes GOTO functions and wireless Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as a wired USB connection. The control module is compatible with ASCOM and INDI drivers, making the mount compatible with “everything” (NINA, Stellarium, SkyPlanetarium, Astroberry, StellarMate, ASIAir, etc.). The OnStepX control module also has the advantage of being based on open-source software, allowing for extensive modification and customization to meet individual needs. The electronic board with the control module uses high-quality TMC2209 stepper motor drivers, ensuring smooth operation of the device and a pleasant sound from the motors.

The device can also be controlled with a Smart Hand Controller type remote with a display (offered as optional equipment). It is standardly equipped with the ability to install a counterweight.

The mount is recommended for telescopes with a focal length of up to approximately 1000 mm. The guiding quality (RMS) over an entire session averages 0.6 arc seconds, with a periodic error of +/- 25″. This value, of course, depends on various factors, such as seeing conditions, the type of telescope and guiding camera, mechanical stability of the entire setup, wind gusts, etc.

Basic parameters:

– Weight of the mount head: 5.6 kg

– Weight of the DUAL dovetail: 0.9 kg

For the installation of the EQHM-17 mount, a proprietary solution called the EQW-72 wedge has been developed. It is recommended for users who wish to maximize the load capacity of the mount while maintaining high rigidity of the entire setup. The base of the wedge has been designed to fit into the mounting platform of the EQ-6 tripod (with a recess of 113 mm in diameter). The wedge is attached to the mounting platform using an M12 screw. Of course, the wedge can be connected to other tripods or bases. Optionally, a version with a base equipped with an M10 threaded hole or 3/8-16UNC (photographic, inch) can be ordered.

Alternatively, the wedge and a William Optics saddle can be used. This solution will be effective for mounting equipment weighing up to approximately 10 kg.
